Google wants us to create great content for people, but what people like, and Google likes, are two separate things. Google loves text, people hate text. Google loves long pieces of content, people like short and concise bits of content. Google hates images, people love em’. You get the point.
So how do you please both Google and people?
It is difficult, but there is a way. I just created a page called Phoenix web design which accomplishes this task. In a perfect world, Google will know that I am a web designer within the Phoenix area and my content is good, because it is simple and to the point. However, I need to make sure that Google knows that ‘Phoenix web design and ImYourBiz’ should be connected.
As you can see the first half of the web page is very simple. I have a headline, and I have a gallery of the websites I have done, which is complimented by a call to action. Most people will probably not look past the gallery, but Google most certainly will. You might have heard that Google doesn’t give content ‘below the fold’ as much consideration content above the fold. So I made sure that I included my keyword within the title.
As you can see, from the image above, I continued with a lot more content. I had to make sure that it was engaging and had plenty of graphics just in case someone did intend to scroll down. The sad fact is that most people don’t need this much information. It would be way better to be concise and simple.
What you need in an SEO landing page
#1 – Engaging content
Sometimes it is very difficult to fit the keyword into the content naturally. You have to make sure that your content is engaging and gets them to read on and take action. Forget about SEO initially and just write the content as if you are writing it for a friend. Once you have done that, read through your content again and see if you can fit the keyword into the body of the text.
#2 – Keyword density
There is no hard and fast rule about how many times you should stuff your page with a given keyword. However, studies have found that any more than 2%, means that your website will read unnaturally. Google will punish you for this. The best rule of thumb would be 1% and below. So for every 100 words you should mention the keyword once. I mentioned ‘Phoenix web design’ 5 times and I have a total of about 480 words. I was able to fit a bit more in than usual, because I wrote ‘Phoenix web designers’ and a derivative of the keyword.
#3 – Titles & Headings
Make sure you mention the keyword in a couple of titles. I tend to mention them at least twice within the body as a <h> tag and obviously once as the name of the page. Don’t stuff your page with headings though. It looks stupid.
#4 – Toggle text
This is one of the easiest ways to get more content on your website without bothering your visitors.
This feature is normally used with FAQs, but it can be very useful for adding loads of content to your website. Google doesn’t value this content as much, but they still count it. If a page is struggling to get up there in the rankings, then you can add an extra 2,000-3,000 words to the page without an issue.
So there you go! There are a couple of other things to look out for, but these four steps will help you out a lot. SEO is not an easy thing, and onpage optimization is only one part of it.
